MIRI PORT RECEIVES OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HEALTH AWARDS
a Miri Port has received the national-level "Occupational Safety and Health Awards of Excellent 2007” under the category for public service and local authority.
The award was presented to the General Manager, En. Shebli Hairani by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
For the port, it means it has taken a leap forward in fulfilment of its vision as “To be the Leading Port With Diversified Logistics Services in the Region”.
Besides being a source of pride, the award will also motivate the port management to continuously nurture a work culture that emphasises safety and health of its workers and related parties.
The evolution of occupational safety and health has come a long way in Miri Port.
Since Feb 1994, the Occupational Safety & Health Act 1994 was introduced, the authority began to accord priority to safety to its operation.
On 15 th April, 2005, the port received the OHSAS 18001:1999 Occupational Safety and Health Management System Certificate by SIRIM – the first in the country to be given the award.
In 1997, the port obtained ISO 9001 certification, the first port and government agency to do so.
Since then, safety and quality assurance efforts have been integral part of its service delivery system.
